Teen Monologue Festival

Announcing the return of The Show Must Go On Teen Monologue Festival! The festival is open to students Grades 9-12, and from all submissions, 10 finalists will be chosen to perform live on the A Noise Within main stage on Tuesday, October 29 at 6 pm!

How to Submit

Step 1: Using the application form below, participants will submit their proposed monologue playwright and play title by Friday, September 27.
Step 2: Participants will receive instructions on how to submit their self-tape audition. Participants must submit their self-tape audition by Friday, October 4.
Step 3: 10 finalists will be announced on Thursday, October 10.

Application Form

Monologue Criteria

Must be one to two minutes in length.

Must be from a published play, not a stand-alone monologue from a monologue book or online source. Self-written monologues are also not accepted.

Participants must read the entire play and be prepared to speak on the importance of the play and why the participant selected it.

We encourage participants to select plays from the following list.

Finalists will receive and are required to attend:

Sunday, October 27
Finalists Masterclass – 11 am-5 pm

Finalists will participate in a Masterclass at the theatre with a professional A Noise Within Company Actor. Finalists will also attend an exclusive luncheon before attending the 2pm performance of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson. Attendance is mandatory.

Tuesday, October 29
Finalists Performance – 6 pm

Finalists will perform live on the ANW main stage in front of a panel of theatre professionals and a live audience on Tuesday, October 29 at 6 pm.

2023 Finalists

Maxwell Joseph Beckman
Mater Dei High School
Maxwell Beckman is currently a senior at Mater Dei High School. He started out his acting career in 8th grade, after a lifetime of exposure to different theatrical performances. Since then, he has performed in various plays and musicals, thoroughly enjoying each one. His favorite show to be a part of has been Little Shop of Horrors and his favorite character that he has played is Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast. He intends to keep theater as a large part of his life as he continues his education.
Ty Dooley
View Park High School
Hi, I’m Ty Dooley. I’m a 11th grader at View Park Preparatory High School. I’m from south central Los Angeles California. My inspiration for acting stems from wanting to see different perspectives and my love to see characters come to life. I get to explore multiple personalities just through acting out a scene. I aspire to become a therapist studying human behavior in the future. Thank you for picking my monologue.
James Greer
Milken Community School

James Greer is a high school senior and primarily a Shakespeare actor who has been performing since middle school. He loves all things dramatic and flamboyant, both on and off the stage. He’s thrilled for this opportunity!

Michelle Perez
Los Angeles High School of the Arts
Michelle fell in love with theatre during middle school but didn’t pursue it till high school. In the past, she’s been in her high school’s productions, such as Working: The Musical, Chavez Ravine, and she was a head stage manager for The Last Firefly. She is currently in her school’s production of Men on Boats, which will be opening in December. She is excited about this opportunity to perform at ANW. Michelle would like to thank all her loved ones for their support!!
Samantha Porter
Glendora High School
Samantha Porter is a senior at Glendora High School and is involved with the Drama, Show Choir, and Journalism programs at GHS. She is the President of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance and is involved with many other clubs at her school. She is honored to have the opportunity to be a finalist in a competition like this one!
Scarlett Ray
Homeschool

Scarlett Ray is a fourteen year old actress with a passion for the stage. She fell in love with acting six years ago and has never looked back on performing. Her favorite type of theatre is Shakespeare, but she has previous experience in musical theatre and voice over. Some favorite roles include Mercutio, Juliet, Prince Escalus, Malvolio, and the original Trixie in the newly published musical Sheep Stuff. Besides acting, she sings soprano in choir and does Brazilian jiu jitsu. At the age of twelve, she published her first novel, The Summer of the Terrific Trio. Scarlett aspires to be a novelist as well as a professional actor. She would like to thank the fantastic people at A Noise Within for supporting her and giving her the chance to shine!

Rachel Rogstad
Arrowhead Christian Academy
Rachel Rogstad is a senior from Arrowhead Christian Academy, and this is her second year performing at a Noise Within’s monologue competition! She has been in love with theatre ever since middle school, and some of her favorite productions she’s been in are Hello, Dolly! at the Redlands Bowl, Tuck Everlasting at Legendary Productions, and Little Women at her school, where she played Marmee. She is currently playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid at her school. She wants to give many thanks to the wonderful people at A Noise Within, and a huge thank-you to Mrs. Leal for her help and coaching!
Zion Traylor
Long Beach Polytechnic
Zion Day Traylor is 15 years old, and goes to Long Beach Polytechnic High School. She has been acting since she was 5 years old. Her first commercial was for Muppet Moments on Disney; and her latest commercial was for the Super Bowl in 2022 with the hilarious Ty Burrell for Greenlight. She loves everything about theatre, and learning more about acting on stage. She would not be where she is right now without her talented father.
