Youth Programs

For the budding performer (ages 6-18), A Noise Within offers courses especially for homeschoolers focusing on developing scenes from a Shakespearean play. This course covers basic textual analysis (including scansion), voice and improvisation techniques, character development, ensemble building, and acting technique. This is a wonderful opportunity for homeschool students to become a part of the ANW community and make life-long friends. This fall, for the first time, we will offer two separate classes for homeschool students – one for 6-11 year olds and another for 12-18 year olds. Each course will culminate in an exciting performance for family and friends.

This enthralling course is designed to give budding actors the tools to generate authentic connections to dramatic texts, and to create believable and emotionally rich characters. Young Actor’s Workshop (YAW) covers the basic foundations of acting, including given circumstances, objectives, sense memory and recall, and how to effectively use improvisation and pantomime.

Participants in YAW are assigned scene work and improvisational exercises, and the course culminates in a presentation of monologues, scenes, and acting exercises. This fall the course will be divided into two separate sections in order to provide a more tailored and focused experience for students.

  • Adventurers
    • The Adventurers group will be aimed towards our first time or relatively new students who want to learn the basics of acting techniques.
  • Discoverers
    • Students looking for a more in-depth approach to the work and those who have taken the class previously will be best suited to the Discoverers group.
  • Adventurers can graduate to Discoverers when they are ready to delve deeper into technique and material!

If you are uncertain which group will be the best fit for your student, please call the Education Department at 626.356.3104 for more information.

Specially designed for 6-9 year olds, this 8-week program teaches confidence, camaraderie, and acting technique. Whether your child is a budding actor or seeks an extra-curricular program that builds buds, First Stage is “where you get to be really creative and let your imagination go wild!” (Lucy, student)

In First Stage, kids will:

  • Learn the connection between text and performance
  • Act in a variety of plays – comedies and drama both!
  • Gain confidence and learn teamwork
  • Develop characters
  • Create theatrical magic!

This fall, our First Stage class will be divided into two separate groups:

  • Explorers
    • The Explorers will be tailored towards our first time actors or newer students who want a more basic overview of the world of acting, working with other students, and building ensemble in a theatrical setting.
  • Pioneers
    • Students looking for a more in-depth approach to the work and those who have taken the class previously will be best suited to the Pioneers group.
  • Explorers will also have the opportunity to graduate to the Pioneers to continue the fun and continue to build on what they have learned!

If you are uncertain which group will be the best fit for your student, please call the Education Department at 626.356.3104 for more information.
